The Telugu film industry, popularly known as Tollywood is based at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. It has been credited as one of the biggest movie industries in India when it comes to the number of movies made and produced in a year taken into account. In fact, it is India's second-largest film market after Hindi-language films.
Telugu movies have won many awards and accolades like the National Award, Filmfare (south) awards, Cinema Awards, Nandi Awards, Raghupathi Venkaiah Award to name a few. Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad where the shooting of most of the Telugu movies are done, has even won the prestigious Guinness World Records for being the largest film production facility in the entire world.
Most Telugu movies – the old as well as the latest telugu movies, are absolutely mass masala movies. With a predictable storyline, most plots are cocktailed with jaw dropping action sequences, songs (not to forget item numbers) and comedy with a perfect timing. However, there are filmmakers, many of them are educated young filmmakers and technicians who are in the IT sector, who are into offbeat movies. In the recent years, few Telugu superstars like Allari Naresh and Nagarjuna who dared to shatter the archaic stereotypes of Telugu films and stepped into experimental domains.
