Camcorders – Online Buying Guide
So, your daughter has landed the lead role in her school play and you want to record every moment of her performance. Not to worry. It is precisely on such occasions that a camcorder comes handy.
There are camcorders today to suit every need and budget - from high tech camcorders with a slew of advanced features, to the simpler ones, which essentially are of the point and shoot types. Hence those of you who look upon life as a joyous journey, whose every moment needs to be cherished - a camcorder is a must. However, before you buy a camcorder not only should you compare prices between brands & models but also ensure the camcorder you are buying adequately serves the purpose it is intended to serve.
Before buying a camcorder, therefore, one should spend a while researching on the models available, their features, technical specifications and last but not the least, the price.
Factors to Consider before buying a camcorder
# Portability: It should not be too heavy to carry. Before buying the product, one should check the product’s dimensions and weight.
# Usage: One should decide on the type of camcorder one wants to purchase based on usage
# Features & Specifications: One should be careful in checking the features and specifications of a particular model
While checking the specifications of a camcorder, points to be taken into consideration are:
Optical Zoom: Camcorders come with both optical and digital zoom. The digital zoom figures can be ignored because it simply refers to enlargement of pixels which leads to blurry images. The optical zoom is the important factor that lends clarity to the picture. It is better to switch off the digital zoom while shooting as it results in bad video quality.
Battery life: Camcorder batteries run out of charge very soon. Some models offer expandable batteries. These are better for video shooting for longer periods without a break.
Resolution : The higher the resolution in terms of pixels the better the quality of the video.
Manual controls: Over and above the automatic controls, manual controls if used properly help adjusting the amount of light entering the lens. The use of manual controls results in better videography.
Microphone connector: It is better if the camcorder has a port for an external microphone. This enables recording sounds and voices much better than working only with the in – built microphone.
Recording format: The popular recording formats are MiniDV, DVD, and Flash Drive. The MiniDV format is ideal for editing videos. The ultra compact pocket camcorders come with SD cards and Memory sticks. These are convenient but heavily priced.
LCD Screens: Check the LCD screen in daylight as some of the screens are too dim and can cause problems while shooting outdoors or during daylight.
Let budget be the key:
The other important features that one can check out are built -in-light, night-vision, image stabilization, gain, progressive scan etc.
